When you go to your bank and give them your deposit, if you put that money into a savings account, they currently give you a whopping 1-3% return annually for the use of your money.  They then turn around and loan that money for 6-12%, and make the difference.  Some banks maintain a credit card division, often charging up to 21 or 22% interest.  They make a lot of money with your money!  This is the retail money market.  Some would have you believe that is your only choice. When you have $1,000,000 in savings at your bank, you suddenly become a VIP.  They will offer you greater returns.  They need you, they can do more with larger sums, and they can afford to give you more.  And while you are more important to them, they would prefer to keep you in the retail side of the business.  But on the upper end, there is wholesale money market, the market that exists for very wealthy people. There are a series of investment vehicles typically available only to those who can invest 10 to 100 million dollars at a time.  As you might imagine, with these large investments, there is the potential for tremendous returns.
